Many of the second messenger effects of Ca2+ are mediated through the ubiquitous Ca2+ sensing protein, calmodulin (CaM). CaM has no enzymatic activity as such, and its function is to integrate the Ca2+ signal and transduce it to other downstream enzymes, like the calmodulin-dependent kinases [].This entry includes both type I and type II calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinases [], as well as plant calcium-dependent protein kinases, which may also play a role in signal transduction pathways that involve calcium as a second messenger [].
