Five distinct gene products have been identified (NCKX 1-5) in animal tissues such as neurons, smooth muscle, skin pigment epithelium and in retinal rod and cone photoreceptors, indicating that NCKX proteins may play very specific roles, related to Ca2+ homeostasis []. NCKX 1 and 2 are a critical components of the visual transduction cascade, controlling the calcium concentration of outer segments during light and darkness [, ]. NCKX 5 probably transports 1 Ca2+ and 1 K+ in exchange for 4 Na+ and is involved in pigmentation, possibly by participating in ion transport in melanosomes [].Drosophila Nckx30C may function in the removal and maintenance of calcium homeostasis during signaling in the adult and in signaling events during embryogenesis and patterning of imaginal disks [].This entry also includes sodium/calcium exchangers from prokaryotes.
