Description:  The ectonucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase (E-NPP) family consists of proteins which hydrolyse phosphodiester bonds in nucleotides and other substrates [, ]. These enzymes are involved in many roles, including extracellular nucleotide metabolism and the regulation of nucleotide-based intercellular signalling [].At least seven members of this family have been identified so far. Of these, only three (ENPP1-3) have been shown to hydrolyse nucleotides. ENPP1-3 are multidomain proteins consisting of two somatomedin B-like domains, a catalytic domain and a nuclease-like domain, whereas ENPP4-7 have only a catalytic domain []. ENPP4 hydrolyses the dinucleotide adenosine(5')triphospho(5')adenosine and is involved in haemostasis and platelet aggregation []. ENPP6 and ENPP7 have only been shown to hydrolyse phosphodiester bonds in lysophospholipids or other choline phosphodiesters. ENPP2 hydrolyses lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) to produce lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), which activates G-protein-coupled receptors toinduce various cellular responses []. Short Name:  E-NPP
