NHX proteins mediate Na+/H+ and K+/H+ antiport across the membrane using the H+ gradient as a driving force and are considered to be responsible for Na+ sequestration into intracellular compartments under salinity stress [, ].In Arabidopsis thaliana, eight AtNHX genes have been identified []. This entry includes AtNHX1-4. AtNHX1 and AtNHX2 are as salt tolerance determinants []; they also control vacuolar pH and K+ homeostasis to regulate growth, flower development, reproduction and stomatal function [, ].
