Protein Domain : IPR005314

Type:  Family Name:  Peptidase C50, separase
Description:  Cysteine peptidases have characteristic molecular topologies, which can be seen not only in their three-dimensional structures, but commonly also in the two-dimensional structures. These are peptidases in which the nucleophile is the sulphydryl group of a cysteine residue. Cysteine proteases are divided into clans (proteins which are evolutionary related), and further sub-divided into families, on the basis of the architecture of their catalytic dyad or triad []. This group of cysteine peptidases belong to MEROPS peptidase family C50 (separase family, clan CD). The active site residues for members of this family and family C14 occur in the same order in the sequence: H,C.The separases are caspase-like proteases, which plays a central role in the chromosome segregation. In yeast they cleave the rad21 subunit of the cohesin complex at the onset of anaphase. During most of the cell cycle, separase is inactivated by the securin/cut2 protein, which probably covers its active site. Short Name:  Peptidase_C50
