Type: | Family | Name: | Tryptophan 5-monooxygenase |
Description: | Tryptophan 5-monooxygenase () is a member of the family of tetrameric, biopterin-dependent aromatic amino acid hydroxylases found in metazoans. It is closely related to tetrameric phenylalanine-4-hydroxylase and tyrosine 3-monooxygenase, and more distantly related to the monomeric phenylalanine-4-hydroxylase found in some Gram-negative bacteria. It is the rate-limiting enzyme in the biosynthesis of serotonin in the central nervous system and catalyzes the first step of the synthesis of melatonin in the pineal gland [].L-tryptophan + tetrahydropteridine + O2 = 5-hydroxy-L-tryptophan + dihydropteridine + H2O | Short Name: | Trp_5_mOase |
